Lesson 1
🎯 Goal
Get the real FEDS scouting app running in your browser, then find your Training Page inside it.
Rules for Module 2: you learn by doing. Each lesson is a list of tasks. Do them in order. Every task has a ✅ checkpoint, so you always know if it worked.
Tools you’re installing: Git saves your work. Android Studio is where you write code. Flutter turns our Dart code into an app (Dart comes inside it).
Task 1: Install Git
- Windows: download from git-scm.com and use the default options.
- Mac: open Terminal and run
git --version. If Git isn’t installed, macOS offers to install the Command Line Tools. Click Install.
✅ Checkpoint: this prints a version number:
git --versionTask 2: Install Android Studio
- Download it from developer.android.com/studio and install it.
- Open it. In the setup wizard choose Standard, accept the licenses, and wait for the downloads ☕
Task 3: Add the Flutter plugin
- Open Plugins:
- Windows: File → Settings → Plugins
- Mac: Android Studio → Settings → Plugins (
Cmd + ,)
- In the Marketplace tab, search Flutter and click Install. Say Yes to also install Dart.
- Click Restart IDE.
Task 4: Install the Flutter SDK
- Go to docs.flutter.dev/get-started/install , pick your OS, and choose Android.
- Download the SDK and unzip it to a simple folder with no spaces:
- Windows:
C:\dev\flutter - Mac:
~/dev/flutter
- Windows:
- Add Flutter to your PATH so the terminal can find it:
- Windows: Start menu → Edit environment variables for your account → select Path → Edit → New →
C:\dev\flutter\bin - Mac: run this in Terminal:
echo 'export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/dev/flutter/bin"' >> ~/.zshrc
- Windows: Start menu → Edit environment variables for your account → select Path → Edit → New →
If the official page disagrees with this lesson, the official page wins. Tell David so we can fix the lesson.
✅ Checkpoint: open a new terminal. This prints a version number:
flutter --versionOur app needs Flutter 3.22 or newer (it requires Dart 3.4.3+). The latest stable download is fine.
Then run flutter doctor. You’ll paste its output at the end of this lesson.
Task 5: Get the real code
The team keeps many projects in one repo called feds-central. The scouting app is the scouting/android folder inside it. In a terminal:
git clone https://github.com/feds201/feds-central.git
cd feds-central
git checkout nonRobot-module-2The nonRobot-module-2 branch has your Training Page already in it. (What’s a branch? That’s Lesson 3.)
✅ Checkpoint: run git branch. The line with * says nonRobot-module-2.
Task 6: Open and run the app
- Android Studio → File → Open → choose
feds-central/scouting/android(only this folder!). Click Trust Project. - When a banner offers Pub get, click it. (Or run
flutter pub getin the terminal.) - Find the run button at the top and run your code on either Chrome or Edge!
The first build is slow (several minutes). Go get water.
✅ Checkpoint: the FEDS scouting app opens on your selected browser.
Task 7: Find your page
- Tap each of the buttons on the home screen. Write down the names of all the buttons you see.
- Find the orange Training button and tap it.
✅ Checkpoint: a page titled Training Page says Hello, FEDS! This is the page you’ll build in this module.
If something goes wrong
flutteris not recognized: your PATH is wrong, or you didn’t open a new terminal. Redo Task 4, step 3.- Build errors: check your internet, and run again. Same error twice? Copy the text and ask.
To complete this lesson
Paste into this lesson’s tab in your training doc (text, no screenshots):
- The output of
flutter doctor - The names of all the buttons on the home screen
- The result of
git branch
